Recall that the Kano State Government had, on November 12, 2024, inaugurated a seven-member committee under the chairmanship of the Commander General, Hisba Board, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, to repatriate Almajiris (street children) to their respective states of origin.

Speaking with newsmen yesterday, the Board’s Deputy Commander General, Dr. Mujahideen Abubakar, said the State government has abandoned the idea of repatriating the children to their states of origin.

“We have decided now to keep them at the Hajj camp and give them proper education, because we felt that it’s not proper to repatriate them to their respective States of origin. As you know, Kano is a mother to all of them, hence the decision to discard the idea of repatriating them; we will now sponsor their education up to the tertiary level”, he added.

Dr. Abubakar said those found to be with one illness or the other had already been treated and that the children were found sleeping under bridges, billboards, culvers, and in uncompleted buildings in the city.

“It was regrettable that all the children are not enrolled in any Quranic or Islamiyya school. They were just roaming the streets of Kano, and they are not in any business while most of them are teenagers;they don’t have anybody taking care of them.

“We have also collected their data to ascertain from where they came based on the data; they are from Kano, Katsina, Borno and Jigawa States”, he stated.
